Breast reconstruction can be performed either immediately, many months or even years after mastectomy or lumpectomy. During reconstruction, a breast shape is created using a flap of tissue from another place on your body, usually the abdomen (autologous reconstruction - namely a DIEP flap).
Some insurance companies will fund the surgery (please speak to your company prior to seeking treatment).
Main points of surgery:
Abdominal wall reconstruction surgery is performed to reinforce the integrity of the abdomen, support the abdominal muscles, protect the intra-abdominal organs and prevent the intestines from protruding through the abdominal wall. This is often a joint procedure with a General Surgeon. During surgery, the abdominal muscles are rearranged with the goal of effectively eliminating the weakness or defect. Often there is a need to reinforce the newly positioned muscles with mesh placement (a surgical mesh used to repair hernias).
